MSCMS 2001 Server: Installation Summary

The InstallShield Wizard steps you through the basic installation, copying all required files and setting up registry keys. At the end of the installation, the Database Configuration Application (DCA) launches.

The DCA allows you to select the Content Management Server 2001 System Account, the virtual Web sites for the server and the Server Configuration Application (SCA), and then select or install the database.

After the database has been installed, you can configure the server (or servers) from the client browser using the Software Configuration Application (SCA), described in Chapter 5.

Note The DCA will need to stop IIS. The InstallShield Wizard stops IIS for an upgrade and restarts it at the end of installation.

Software licensing

The three editions of Content Management Server 2001 are distributed as follows:

  • Evaluation—automatically expires 120 days after you install it

  • Developer—obtainable through the MSDN network

  • Enterprise—this is the "selling" copy of the product.

For the Developer and Enterprise editions, you enter the product license key during the installation via the Customer Information dialog box.

Installation user requirements

You must be logged on using a domain account with administrator rights for the machine on which you'll be installing the MSCMS 2001 server. If you plan to use a trusted connection to configure the database in the DCA, the logged on user must also have dbo (database owner) rights to the database.

Note If the MSCMS 2001 server installation ends prematurely, some registry settings and other components could remain on your machine. These components won't adversely affect subsequent installations.

Insert the MSCMS 2001 product CD in the CD drive on a machine running Windows 2000. Double-click setup.exe in the product directory. The InstallShield Wizard presents a series of dialog boxes with the required action, as described in the following table.

Troubleshooting Tips

In addition to checking Chapter 8 for a list of error messages, their causes or the context in which they occurred and suggested recovery actions, the following information may help if you have problems during the installation.

For MSCMS 2001 server

A cumulative log file is produced during the installation, with information from each upgrade added to the existing information and a time and date stamp and version number indicated. For a new installation, a new log file is created as part of the file creation step.

The log file at first will be in the Windows temp directory, and later be re-located to the parent directory of the MSCMS 2001 server.

For MSCMS 2001 Site Stager

If you uninstall the Site Builder on a machine that contains the Site Stager, Site Stager might not run properly. Uninstalling and reinstalling Site Stager solves the problem.
