Issues with Update Rollups
Applies to: Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007
Topic Last Modified: 2009-01-28
This topic describes potential issues that you may experience with update rollups for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.
When you are installing an update rollup, you will see a welcome screen with the following message: Please wait while the Setup Wizard prepares to guide you through the installation. The welcome screen shows Back and Next buttons that are unavailable; however, Next will eventually become activated.
When you click Next, one of the following messages appears: Please wait while the installer finishes determining your disk space requirements or Computing Space Requirements.
In response, you can either click Return or just wait. It could take a few minutes for the disk space calculation to complete. After the calculation is done, both the message and the welcome screen disappear, and the License Terms screen appears. Select I accept the License Terms, and click Next to complete the installation.
When you install an update rollup, you receive the following message:
Creating native images for .NET assemblies. This process can take a long time to finish.
During this phase of the installation, the rollup invokes the Native Image Generator (Ngen.exe) tool. This tool completes a precompilation, or "pre-JITing," of the managed code that is updated on the system to help improve performance. This step can take a long time, and it depends on the following conditions:
The speed of the processors and the hard disk drives that are used by the computer.
The Internet connection and the access speed to the Certificate Revocation List Web site.
The Ngen.exe tool uses this Web site to verify that the publisher's certificate has not been revoked.
For more information about the Ngen.exe tool, see Native Image Generator.
When you are installing an update rollup, the installation fails with an error like the following:
Event ID: 1023
Description: Product: Microsoft Exchange Server - Update 'Update Rollup 1 for Exchange Server 2007 (KB930809) 8.0.708.3' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file Drive:\FileName.log.
This issue may result if you have installed any interim updates/hotfixes for Exchange 2007. If you have installed interim updates/hotfixes, remove them and then retry the installation of the update rollup package.
This issue may also occur if no ExchangeSetupLogs directory was present. Confirm that the ExchangeSetupLogs directory exists. If it is missing, re-create it manually, and then retry the installation of the update rollup package.
