Modifying the Number of Available Engines

Modifying the Number of Available Engines

Use the Speech Engine Configurations tab of the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in for Microsoft Speech Server (MSS) 2004 to change the number of available engine instances for a particular engine configuration.

The number of engine instances corresponds roughly to the number of simultaneous calls the system can support.

For example, decrease the number of engine instances to conserve memory, particularly when loading large resource files. Increase engine instances if the system needs to handle increased call volume, and available memory and CPU speed are sufficient.

For more information, see Overview: SES Memory Usage.

Note  When a language pack is installed, (see Installing or Removing a Language Pack), the default engine configurations for that language are created with zero engine instances. Use the following procedure to increase the number of engine instances.

To modify the number of available engines

  1. Open the MMC Administration console. (For instructions, see Administering Speech Server Using MMC.)

  2. In the console tree, expand the applicable group.

  3. In the details pane, double-click the computer running SES to open the SES properties page.

  4. Click the Speech Engine Configurations tab.

  5. Under Engine configurations:, select the configuration you wish to modify.

  6. In Instances, enter the number of speech engine instances to use for this configuration.

Remarks

MSS Standard Edition is limited to a total of 24 instances per type of engine (Recognition, Prompt, or DTMF) across configurations. Increasing engine instances for a given configuration may require decreasing engine instances for other configurations of the same engine type.
