Monitoring Performance

Monitoring Performance

Regular performance monitoring ensures that operating information about the deployed environment is current. Define a baseline—a range of measurements that represent acceptable performance under typical operating conditions using performance data collected over a range of activities and loads. This baseline provides a reference point that makes it easier to spot problems when they occur.

In addition, when troubleshooting system problems, performance data provides information about the behavior of system resources at the time the problem occurs, which is useful in pinpointing the cause. Finally, performance monitoring provides data to project future growth and to plan for how changes in the system configuration might affect future operation.

Performance Counters

Microsoft Speech Server (MSS) provides the following performance counters to help monitor the system:

System Monitor

Use System Monitor in Windows Server 2003 to provide detailed information about system resource usage.

To start System Monitor
  1. In Windows Server 2003, on the Start menu, click Administrative Tools.

  2. On the Administrative Tools menu, click Performance.

    –OR–

On the Start menu, click Run, type perfmon.msc, and then click OK.

  3. In the Performance console, expand Performance Log and Alerts in the console tree, and then click Counter Logs.

Each performance object is a collection of counters related to a particular service. Counters are used to measure or track information such as the number of items used, transfer rates, and average times for operations.

  4. Either create a new log using the following procedure, or select a performance object to monitor.

To create a new log
  1. Right-click a blank area of the details pane, and then click New Log Settings.

  2. In Name, type the name of the counter log, and then click OK.

  3. On the General tab, click Add Objects and select the performance objects to add, or click Add Counters to select the individual counters to log.
