Architecture: Speech Add-in for Internet Explorer

The Microsoft Speech Add-in for Microsoft Internet Explorer interprets SALT markup contained in a Web page. After installing the add-in on a client device, the browser is capable of properly rendering SALT elements contained in a Web page. The add-in is required for multimodal connections; telephony operations do not require it.

In addition to interpreting SALT elements, the add-in provides the communication link between the browser and Speech Engine Services (SES).
