Accessing and Using the Windows 2000 Monitoring Tools

You can use the Windows 2000 utilities described in this section to replace or extend monitoring features in Application Center.

Accessing and Using the Windows 2000 Monitoring Tools

Event Viewer

You can use the event logs in the Windows 2000 Event Viewer to gather information about hardware, software, and system problems, and to monitor Windows 2000 security events.

To open Event Viewer

  • In Windows 2000, click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.

Errors are logged when Application Center Events and Performance Logging is installed; both errors and warnings are logged when it is not installed. You can use Event Viewer to see these events even if Application Center is not logging them.

Performance Viewer

You can use Performance Logs and Alerts to collect performance data automatically from local or remote members. You can view logged counter data by using System Monitor or export the data to spreadsheet programs or databases for analysis and report generation.

To open Performance Viewer

  • In Windows 2000, click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Performance.

Health Monitor

Health Monitor performs a number of monitoring tasks. You can create data collectors to gather various data from services, processes, and applications. Then, you can set actions on these data collectors that fire when the status of the data collector changes. Additionally, you can create thresholds that will change the data collector status when a specific metric reaches a specified point.

To open Health Monitor

  • In the Application Center snap-in, expand the cluster node or the cluster member node, right-click Monitors, and then click Edit Monitors.
