Introduction

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is the next version of Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine (MSDE) and is a free, easy-to-use, lightweight, and embeddable version of SQL Server 2005.

SQL Server Express Edition includes powerful features such as SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, a server-based platform for creating and delivering traditional and interactive reports, and a graphical management tool, SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express, for easily managing a database.

Best of all, as your needs grow, your applications will work seamlessly with the rest of the SQL Server product family.

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 is the latest version and a suitable choice for WEPOS devices that require a lightweight database engine and might have to connect to back end database servers.

For more information about SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, see this Microsoft Web site.

Supported SQL Server Express 2005 Version and Scenarios

The SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 is officially supported on WEPOS 1.1.

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition requires enabling a virtual memory pagefile by using the System Managed Size option.

Note

By default, pagefile usage is disabled on WEPOS. You can enable it exactly as you would enable it on a system running Windows XP Professional. You must be logged on with Administrator permissions to enable a virtual memory pagefile.

Additional requirements include installing the .NET Framework 2.0 and the software update found at this Microsoft Web site.

To enable pagefile usage

  1. In Control Panel, open System and choose the Advanced tab.

  2. Under Performance, choose Settings, and then choose the Advanced tab.

  3. Under Virtual Memory, choose Change, and then choose System Managed Size.

  4. Choose OK to affirm your selections.

To evaluate, test and commercially ship SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 on your WEPOS images, you can download the installation package from this Microsoft Web site after accepting the redistributing EULA.

Conclusion

Building on the concepts and procedures introduced in this article, you can implement a powerful, flexible, and lightweight database on your Windows Embedded for Point of Service devices with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2.
