Examples of Typical Administrative Tasks at the Command Line

Any Virtual Machine Manager task that you can perform by using the Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console can also be done at the command line by using the Windows PowerShell – Virtual Machine Manager command shell.

The examples in this section, which are similar to the command-line help topics available in the Virtual Machine Manager command shell, illustrate how to use the command line for a number of common administrative tasks in Virtual Machine Manager. The help topics that you can access from the command line contain from 1–5 examples for each cmdlet and include a total of nearly 300 examples.

The examples in this section assume that you have installed the Administrator Console (and thus the Windows PowerShell – Virtual Machine Manager command shell) on your Virtual Machine Manager server.

The topics in this section use the same format that the examples in the command-line help use:

  • Example name.
  • A series of commands that you type interactively at the command prompt.
  • An explanation for each command line in an example that contains multiple command lines.

Warning

The command-line examples in this section are independent of each other and do not constitute an integrated scenario. The purpose of these examples is to introduce you to using the command shell to perform common administrative tasks. You might need to perform additional tasks to complete some of these examples successfully.
