How to Monitor Jobs

You can monitor jobs in three places in the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) Administrator Console:

  • Jobs view displays a complete listing of VMM jobs that you can search, sort, filter, and group. You can view detailed status for a job and an audit of changes that the job makes to objects in VMM.
  • By opening the Jobs window, you can monitor your own current jobs while you work in any view. This can be useful for monitoring jobs that run a long time, such as converting a physical server. The Jobs window opens by default when a wizard closes. You can open the window at any time by clicking Jobs on the VMM toolbar.
  • To help you diagnose issues with virtual machines and library resources, in Virtual Machines view and Library view, the Latest Job tab in the details pane displays summary information for the most recent job that was performed on the selected object.

You can use the following procedures to monitor all jobs in Jobs view and to monitor the progress of your own jobs in the Jobs window.

To monitor jobs in Jobs view

  1. In the Jobs view, select the job that you want to view in the results pane.

  2. To view the status of the most recent running job, in the navigation pane, under Filters, click Status and then select the Running check box. The topmost job in the results pane is the job with the most recent start time.

    Note

You can filter jobs by job status, owner, and start date. You can select more than one filter in a group and can select filters from different groups at the same time. For example, to review all successful jobs that admin01 in the DOMAIN domain ran over the past two days, you would select Completed in the Status group, select DOMAIN\admin01 in the Owner group, and select both Yesterday and Today in the Start Date group.

  3. Select the job in the results pane. The details pane, beneath the results pane, displays a summary of job information.

  4. Click the Details tab in the details pane to view the status of each step in the job. The steps are displayed hierarchically. Progress and status are displayed for each step. The step progress and the overall job progress are updated automatically as the job progresses.

  5. When the job completes, click the Change Tracking tab to display an audit record of all changes that the job made to objects in Virtual Machine Manager. A single job can make changes to more than one object and will audit changes to all objects that it affected.

To monitor the progress of your jobs in the Jobs window

  1. Open the Jobs window by using either of the following methods:

—In any view, click the My Jobs button on the VMM toolbar or, on the command menu, click Go and then click Jobs.

—If you are completing a wizard, on the Summary page, select the Automatically open the Jobs window to track the progress of my job check box.

The Jobs window displays your own jobs from the current VMM session from most recent to oldest. You can click any column header to sort by that property.

  2. Navigate to and select the job that you want to view the status of. The details pane at the bottom of the window displays summary information for that job.

  3. Click the Progress tab in the details pane to view the status of each step in the job. The step progress and the overall job progress are updated automatically as the job progresses.

  4. When the job completes, click the Change Tracking tab to display an audit trail of all changes the job made to objects in Virtual Machine Manager.
