How to Modify the Properties of a Hardware Profile

You can modify any existing Virtual Machine Manager hardware profile to modify settings for one or more virtual machine hardware components. After you make changes, any new virtual machines that are created by using that hardware profile will use the updated hardware configuration settings.

Changes made to a stand-alone hardware profile affect only the hardware profile itself. Changes do not affect any existing virtual machines that were created earlier by using this profile, nor do they affect settings on a template or virtual machine into which this stand-alone profile was imported earlier. No association is maintained with the hardware profile after a virtual machine or template is created.

Similarly, if you import a stand-alone hardware profile into a template or into a virtual machine and then modify hardware configuration settings on the template or virtual machine, these changes do not affect the original stand-alone hardware profile.

Use the following procedure to navigate to the existing hardware profile whose properties you want to modify.

To modify a hardware profile

  1. Use one of the following methods to locate the hardware profile that you want to modify:

Option 1: Stand-alone hardware profile. In Library view, click the Profiles node in the navigation pane, right-click the hardware profile in the results pane that you want to modify, click Properties, and then click the Hardware Settings tab.

Option 2: Hardware profile on a template. In Library view, expand the Library Server node in the navigation pane, navigate to the library server on which the template you want is stored, click VMs and Templates, right-click the template in the results pane whose hardware profile you want to modify, click Properties, and then click the Hardware Configuration tab.

Option 3: Hardware profile on a stored virtual machine. In Library view, expand the Library Server node in the navigation pane, navigate to the library server on which the virtual machine you want to modify is located, click the VMs and Templates node, right-click the virtual machine in the results pane whose hardware profile you want to modify, click Properties, and then click the Hardware Configuration tab.

Option 4: Hardware profile on a deployed virtual machine. In Virtual Machines view, navigate to the virtual machine you want (if you have a large number of virtual machines stored in multiple host groups, you can expand the host group node that contains the virtual machine you want), right-click the virtual machine in the results pane whose hardware profile you want to modify, click Properties, and then click the Hardware Configuration tab.
