How to Enable Self-Service Users to Create Virtual Machines (SCVMM)

To enable self-service users to create virtual machines, you must grant Create VM permission to the account, assign virtual machine templates for the users to use as they create their virtual machines, and optionally set a virtual machine quota to limit the number of virtual machines the users can deploy at one time.

Use the following procedure to enable self-service users to create virtual machines when you create or modify a self-service policy.

To enable self-service users to create virtual machines

  1. If you are creating a new self-service policy, navigate to the Virtual Machine Creation Settings page of the New Self-Service Policy wizard.

    -Or-

If you are modifying an existing self-service policy, display the VM Creation tab of the policy.

  2. To grant the users Create VM permission, select the Allow users to create new virtual machines check box.

  3. The users will create their virtual machines from the virtual machine templates that you provide. To add templates to the self-service policy:

    1. Click Add Template.
The Select a Template dialog box displays the templates that are available in the Virtual Machine Manager library.
    2. To add a template, select the template and click OK.

For information about creating templates, see How to Create a Virtual Machine Template.

  4. Under Virtual machine quota, optionally set a quota on deployed virtual machines for the user or group:

    1. Select the Set quota for deployed virtual machines check box.
    2. In Maximum quota points allowed, specify how many quota points the user or group will be allowed.
The virtual machine template determines the number of quota points assigned to each virtual machine that is created from it. For more information, see About Virtual Machine Templates.
If the self-service policy is for a group, the type of virtual machine ownership determines how the quota is applied. If the policy is configured for shared ownership of virtual machines, a single quota is applied to all virtual machines deployed by members of the group. If the policy is configured for individual ownership of virtual machines, this option sets an individual quota on the virtual machines deployed by each group member. For more information, see About Virtual Machine Quotas.
