How to Move Hosts to a Host Group
In Hosts view, the following methods are provided for moving one or more virtual machine hosts to a host group:
- Drag and drop selected hosts to a host group.
- Use the Move to host group action.
With either method, you can select multiple hosts, and your selection can include hosts in different host groups.
Important
If a host belongs to a host group that is used for virtual machine self-service, before you move the host to a different host group, ensure that the change in host groups will not cause a service interruption for self-service users who have virtual machines on the host. Although the self-service policies of a parent host group are inherited by its child host groups, moving a host to a child host group can result in changes in virtual machine permissions under some circumstances. To move hosts to a host group by using the drag and drop method
In Hosts view, in the navigation pane, navigate to the host group that contains the hosts you want to move.
In the results pane, select hosts to move by using one of the following methods:
- To select a single host, click the host.
- To select multiple consecutive hosts, hold down SHIFT while you click the first and final hosts in the set.
- To select multiple hosts that are not together, hold down CTRL while you click each host.
With the hosts selected, drag with the mouse to the target host group in the navigation pane.
If any hosts belong to a host group that contains self-service policies, a confirmation prompt is displayed. Before you proceed, ensure that moving the host to a different host group will not cause service interruptions for self-service users who have virtual machines on the host.
To move the hosts to the new host group, click OK.
To move hosts to a host group by using the "Move to host group" action
In Hosts view, navigate to the host group that contains the hosts you want to move.
In the results pane, select the hosts that you want to move by using one of the following methods:
- To select a single host, click the host.
- To select multiple consecutive hosts, hold down SHIFT while you click the first and final hosts in the set.
- To select multiple hosts that are not together, hold down CTRL while you click each host.
In the Actions pane, under Host, click Move to host group.
In the Move Hosts dialog box, under Parent host group, navigate to the host group you want to move the hosts to. (Based on your selection, the Current path field displays the host path within the host group hierarchy, which identifies the host.) Then click OK.
If any hosts belong to a host group that contains self-service policies, a confirmation prompt is displayed. Before you proceed, ensure that moving the host to a different host group will not cause service interruptions for self-service users who have virtual machines on the host.
To move the hosts to the new host group, click OK.
