How to Configure a Virtual Machine for Self-Service
Use the Self-Service tab in Virtual Machine Properties to assign a self-service policy to a virtual machine and optionally specify how many quota points to apply against the owner's virtual machine quota in virtual machine self-service. For more information, see About Self-Service Policies.
The self-service policy determines which virtual machine permissions the owner has on the virtual machine. However, assigning a self-service policy does not specify the owner. To make the virtual machine available to a self-service user or group, you must also specify that account as the owner on the General Properties tab.
The following procedure includes all of the required settings in Virtual Machine Properties for assigning a virtual machine to a self-service user or group.
Note
To make the virtual machine available to the user or group, you must deploy the virtual machine on a host in the host group that contains the self-service policy. For an overview of the self-service setup, see How to Set Up Virtual Machine Self-Service.
To configure a virtual machine for self-service
In the Virtual Machine Properties dialog box, display the General tab. In Owner, enter the user or group who will own the virtual machine.
On the Self-Service tab, configure settings for the self-service policy:
- In Self-service policy, enter the name of the self-service policy that will apply to the virtual machine.
The self-service policy determines what the owner can do with the virtual machine. For more information, see About Self-Service Policies. - To apply points against the self-service user's virtual machine quota when the virtual machine is deployed, in Quota points, specify how many points to apply for this virtual machine.

- In Self-service policy, enter the name of the self-service policy that will apply to the virtual machine.
