How to Clone a Virtual Machine

Use the following procedure to create a new virtual machine that is based on an existing virtual machine. You can clone a virtual machine that is stored in the library or a deployed virtual machine that is stopped.

You cannot make changes to the operating system settings, but you can make changes to the hardware profile.

To clone a virtual machine

  1. Select the virtual machine that you want to use as the source for a new virtual machine by using one of the following methods:

    1. For a stored virtual machine—In Library view, click the virtual machine in the result pane.
    2. For a deployed virtual machine—In Virtual Machines view, click the virtual machine in the result pane and then verify that the status of the virtual machine is Stopped. If the virtual machine is not stopped, click Stop in the Actions pane.
  2. With a virtual machine selected and stopped, in the Actions pane, click Clone virtual machine.

  3. The remaining steps for completing the wizard are identical to the steps for creating a new virtual machine as described in the following procedure: How to Create a Virtual Machine.
