How to Reassociate a Managed Computer with Another Virtual Machine Manager Server

Occasionally, you might want to transfer one or more managed computers from one Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) server to another. For example, you might want to consolidate the hosts that are being managed by two or more VMM servers onto a single VMM server.

To reassociate a library server with a different VMM server, run the Add Library Server Wizard in a VMM Administrator Console that is connected to the destination VMM server. For more information about adding a library server, see How to Add a Library Server.

Note

You must remove a library server from its original VMM server before you can add it to another VMM server.

To reassociate a host with a different VMM server, run the Add Hosts Wizard in a VMM Administrator Console that is connected to the destination VMM server, and select the Reassociate agent with Virtual Machine Manager server check box on the Configurations Settings page. For more information about adding hosts, see How to Add Hosts in a Trusted Domain.

Alternatively, you might want to transfer one or more hosts back to a VMM server on which they have been previously added and have not been deleted from. For example, you might transfer hosts to another VMM server and then have a need to transfer some or all of them back to the original VMM server. In this situation, the agents for these hosts still appear in the Managed Computers pane of Administration view for the original VMM server. However, because the agents have been reassociated with a different VMM server, their status in the current VMM server is reported as Access denied.

To begin monitoring and managing of the hosts again by using the original VMM server, you must reassociate the agents with the current VMM server.

To reassociate an agent on a host with its original Virtual Machine Manager server

  1. In Administration view, click Managed Computers and then select the agents you want to reassociate.

  2. In the Actions pane, click Reassociate.

    Note

The Reassociate command is enabled only when the status of an agent is reported as Access denied because it is no longer associated with the current VMM server.

  3. In the Reassociate Agent dialog box, type the credentials of a domain account with administrator privileges on the selected managed computer.
