Virtual Machine Host Hardware Requirements

The hardware requirements for a virtual machine host vary depending on a number of factors, including but not limited to the following:

  • The number and type of guest operating systems.
  • The system configuration.
  • The applications that you plan to run on the guest operating systems.
  • The anticipated workloads.

The practical limit of how many virtual machines you can run simultaneously on a host depends on system resources, the amount of memory assigned to each virtual machine, and the total physical memory available on the host.

Note

A VMM host must be running Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 or above. For more information about sizing and configuring hosts, see the Virtual Server 2005 Deployment Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=86410).
