How to Modify Protection Groups After Migration

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2007

When you created the protection group in DPM 2006, you configured synchronization frequency and might have modified the default shadow copy schedule. The migrated protection group retains those settings for short-term, disk-based protection, and DPM 2007 applies the default retention range of five days.

After you migrate the protection group and replicas, you can modify the protection group to add long-term, tape-based protection. You can also modify the retention range, synchronization frequency, and recovery point schedule for short-term, disk-based protection.

Note

DPM 2006 enables synchronization as frequently as hourly. DPM 2007 enables synchronization as frequently as every 15 minutes. The synchronization frequency that was applied to the protection group in DPM 2006 is preserved by the migration tool. Consider modifying your migrated protection groups to benefit from more frequent synchronizations in DPM 2007.

To modify a protection group

  1. In DPM Administrator Console, click Protection on the navigation bar.

  2. Select the protection group to modify, and in the Actions pane, click Modify protection group.

    The Modify Group Wizard opens.

  3. On the Select Group Members page, you can add more data sources to the protection group. You can also exclude folders from protection and exclude file types by specifying a file name extension. Click Next to continue.

  4. On the Select Data Protection Method page, you can change the short-term protection method to tape; add long-term, tape-based protection for the protection group; and rename the protection group. Click Next to continue.

  5. On the Specify Short-Term Protection Policy page, you can change the retention range, synchronization frequency, and recovery point schedule for the short-term, disk-based protection of the protection group. Click Next to continue.

  6. If you added new members to the protection group or changed the short-term protection method from disk to tape, the Review Disk Allocation page appears. On this page, you can change the default disk allocations. Click Next to continue.

  7. If you added long-term, tape-based protection, the Specify Long-Term Protection Policy page displays. On this page, you configure the retention range, backup frequency, and backup schedule for the long-term, tape-based protection of the protection group. You can also specify a name for the tape label. Click Next to continue.

  8. If you added long-term, tape-based protection, the Select Tape and Library Details page appears. On this page, you specify the tape and library to be used for back up of this protection group. You can also specify whether to compress or encrypt the backup data. Click Next to continue.

  9. On the Specify Advanced Options page, click Optimize Performance to configure the following options:

    • On-the-wire compression

    • Synchronization start time

    • Consistency check schedule

    Click Next to continue.

  10. On the Summary page, review the settings, and then click Update group.
