Operations Manager 2007 Glossary

  • action account
The Windows account that the MonitoringHost.exe processes run under to gather data from providers and to run actions, such as scripts, command-line batch files, and so on.
  • agent
A System Center Operations Manager service that runs on each computer that you want to monitor. An agent captures information from the computer on which it is running, applies predefined rules to the captured data, and performs actions as defined by the rules.
  • agentless managed computer
A computer managed by a remote agent.
  • agent-managed computer
A computer managed by the local agent running on a System Center Operations Manager Management Server.
  • alert
An indication of a significant event. Alerts are defined by rules.
  • alert rule
Rule that specifies one response for a number of previously defined alerts.
  • alert severity
Property of an alert indicating its seriousness. Examples include Service Unavailable, Security Issue, Critical Error, Error, Warning, Information, and Success.
  • Alert View
The Operations Manager console pane that displays specified alerts in the management group.
  • Agentless Exception Monitoring (AEM)
An Operations Manager service that provides monitoring of application errors on clients.
  • conditional filter
Filter that allows Operations Manager to evaluate further rules but does not insert events into the database unless another rule match occurs.
  • console scope
In the Operations Manager Operations Console, defines a set of computer groups for individual users. The user sees only those computers that are in the computer groups associated with the console scope.
  • database filter
Filter that allows Operations Manager to evaluate further rules but does not insert matching events into the database.
  • event consolidation
Combines multiple events into one event. The single event identifies the number of consolidated events and when the first and last consolidated events occurred.
  • Event View
Operations Manager console pane that displays specified events in the management group.
  • favorite view
In Operations Manager 2007, a view available from the My Workspace area of the Operations Console where you can save views that you regularly use, similar to how you save a Web page to your Favorites list in Internet Explorer.
  • heartbeat
Periodic pulse from the agent that contains information related to its viability. The heartbeat also informs Operations Manager of the current rules evaluated by the agent, requesting updates if necessary.
  • Knowledge Base
    See product knowledge.
  • Management Group
Group of computers containing the following Operations Manager components: one database, one or more Management Servers, and one or more agents.
  • Management Packs
Predefined solutions from Microsoft, or from other vendors or providers, that contain computer groups and rules, with filters, performance counters, and alerts defined for specific customer applications, such as Microsoft Exchange.
  • Management Server
Operations Manager server that provides a communication channel between the database server and the managed objects within the Management Group.
  • monitor
In Operations Manager, a state machine that uses events, performance data, and other information to define the state of an object, such as an application. The rollup of the monitors for an object determines the overall state of the object—for example, healthy, warning, or error.
  • Operations Console
Operations Manager interface that you use to perform monitoring, administration, authoring, and reporting functions.
  • Operations Manager Connector Framework
An interface to the SDK Service that allows applications to synchronously communicate with the Root Management Server.
  • Operations Manager database
A SQL Server database that stores configuration data, operations data, and security data.
  • Operations Manager Health Explorer
A window in Operations Manager where you can view and then take action on alerts, state changes, and other significant issues generated by monitoring objects on your network.
  • Performance View
Operations Console pane that displays specified performance information.
  • product connector
A software component that is used to synchronize Operations Manager data with other management systems.
  • product knowledge
A collection of rule comments that embodies knowledge about the meaning and importance of events. Product knowledge contains predefined information from Microsoft.
  • Reporting data warehouse
The database used by the Reporting component of Operations Manager.
  • resolution state
Status in the cycle of resolving alerts. Default resolution states include New, Acknowledged, and Resolved, among others.
  • Root Management Server
The first Management Server installed for a Management Group. The Root Management Server performs unique functions for a Management Group—for example, it functions as the Management Server the Operations Console connects to.
  • rule
Method of grouping computers or identifying data to collect. Rules can define a collection of computers for similar event management. Rules can also define the events, alerts, and performance data to collect, what to do with the information after it is collected, and so on.
  • Run As Account
An identity that can be associated with a Run As Profile. See Run As Profile.
  • Run As Profile
A profile that associates an identity with a module so that it can run as that identity.
  • SDK client
An application that uses the Operations Manager class libraries to connect to the SDK Service. SDK clients include the Operations Console, the Web Console, the Operations Manager Command Shell, and other customized applications.
  • SDK Service
A Windows service that runs on the Root Management Server in each Management Group. This service allows client applications to access Operations Manager data and functionality.
  • synthetic transaction
Actions, run in real time, that are performed on monitored objects. You can use synthetic transactions to measure the performance of a monitored object and to see how Operations Manager reacts when synthetic stress is placed on your monitoring settings.
  • task
Action that diagnoses or repairs a problem. A task can also automate a management process.
  • user role
Associated with a scope, a profile that defines the objects upon which the profile operations are defined. The definition also includes a name and a description.
  • view
In the Operations Manager Operations Console, a view of the data from the database with predefined criteria.
  • Web Console
Operations Manager Web-based interface that you use to perform monitoring functions.
