To create a protocol

  1. In the console tree of ISA Server Management:

    • For ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition, for enterprise-level protocols, expand Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, expand Enterprise, and then click Enterprise Policies.
    • For ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition, for array-level protocols, expand Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, expand Arrays, expand Array_Name, and then click Firewall Policy.
    • For ISA Server 2006 Standard Edition, expand Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, expand Server_Name, and then click Firewall Policy.
  2. On the Toolbox tab, click Protocols.

  3. On the toolbar beneath Protocols, click New, and then click Protocol.

  4. In the New Protocol Definition Wizard, follow the on-screen instructions.

Note   To open ISA Server Management, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Server Management.

After you create a protocol, you can apply one or more application filters to the protocol. When you apply an application filter, that filter will perform additional filtering functionality.

For ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition, protocols that are defined or modified at the enterprise level can be used in array-level rules. However, these enterprise-level protocols cannot be modified at the array level.

For protocols used in access rules, protocol direction should be outbound. For server publishing rules, protocol direction should be inbound.

After you click Apply in the details pane, the policy is updated. The new policy applies only to new connections.
