To drain a server

  1. In the console tree of ISA Server Management, click Firewall Policy.

  2. On the Toolbox tab, click Network Objects.

  3. On the toolbar beneath Network Objects, expand Server Farms.

  4. Double-click a server farm to open its properties.

  5. On the Servers tab, select a server from the list of servers.

  6. Click Drain to drain the server.

  7. When you want the server to resume servicing requests, click Resume.

To open ISA Server Management, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Server Management.
For ISA Server 2006 Enterprise Edition, expand Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, expand Arrays, expand Array_Name, and then click Firewall Policy.
For ISA Server 2006 Standard Edition, expand Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, expand Server_Name, and then click Firewall Policy.

Important

If you need to perform maintenance on a server, follow these steps:

  1. Drain the server.
  2. Wait for the number of existing Web connections to drop to an acceptable level. For example, use Internet Information Services (IIS) performance counters to monitor the number of connections.
  3. Disconnect the server and perform maintenance tasks.
  4. Reconnect the server and click Resume in the server farm properties.
