Configuring Reporting

Reporting in System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) is provided through the Server Virtualization Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007. Reports are generated by Operations Manager 2007, but they can be opened in Reporting view of the VMM Administrator Console.

Before you can view and open reports in VMM, you must:

  1. Install Operations Manager 2007, set up your reporting server, and install Operations Manager Reporting. For more information, see the Operations Manager 2007 Help (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103587).

  2. Deploy the Server Virtualization Management Pack. For more information, including a link to the download site, see the "About the Server Virtualization Management Pack" topic in VMM Help (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103588).

  3. Add VMM administrators to the Report Operator role in Operations Manager 2007. VMM administrators must have this role to view and open reports in the VMM Administrator Console. For more information, see the "How to Add Users or Groups to the Report Operator User Role in Operations Manager 2007" topic (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103589).

  4. Enable reporting in VMM. For step-by-step instructions for enabling reporting, see the "How to Enable Reporting in Virtual Machine Manager" topic in VMM Help (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=102982).

  5. Install a VMM Administrator Console on the same computer as the VMM server. This enables Operations Manager 2007 administrators to perform tasks on hosts and virtual machines from within the Server Virtualization Management Pack. When you install the VMM Administrator Console, Setup also installs Windows PowerShell — Virtual Machine Manager command shell, which is required to perform these tasks. For step-by-step instructions for installing a VMM Administrator Console, see Installing the VMM Administrator Console.

  6. Install an Operations Manager 2007 agent on each host that you want to monitor. For more information about installing an Operations Manager 2007 agent, see the "How to Deploy the Operations Manager 2007 Agent for Agent-Management of Computers" topic (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103590).

    Note

If you want to monitor virtual machines, you can install an Operations Manager 2007 agent on the virtual machines, but you will need to use Operations Manager 2007 to view those reports.
