Before Search Server can crawl any content sources, you must provide the e-mail address of a contact person in your organization. This enables an external administrator to contact you in case a crawl is contributing to a problem such as performance degradation on a server that you are crawling.

The administrator of a server that you crawl can find the contact e-mail address in the server event logs. For example, if Search Server is crawling Web-based content, the contact e-mail address appears in the Internet Information Services (IIS) logs on the crawled server.

How the contact e-mail address is established during deployment

You establish the contact e-mail address differently depending on whether you install Search Server by using the Basic installation option or the Advanced installation option:

  • Basic installation option

    When you install Search Server by using the Basic option, the installation sets the contact e-mail address to somebody@example.com. After the installation completes, we recommend that you change this to the address of a contact in your organization.

  • Advanced installation option

    After you install Search Server on the first computer in a deployment by using the Advanced option, the Search Server Configuration page appears. On this page, in the Required section, in the Search Contact E-mail section, you must specify the e-mail address of a contact. After you complete the fields on the Search Server Configuration page and click OK to accept the settings, you cannot return to that page. However, you can change the contact e-mail address at any time after that by using the following procedure.

To change the contact e-mail address

Use this procedure to change the contact e-mail address.

Change the contact e-mail address

  1. On the Search Administration page, do one of the following:

    • In the Crawling section, click Proxy and timeouts.

    • In the System Status section, next to Contact e-mail address, click the e-mail address.

  2. On the Manage Farm-Level Search Settings page, in the Contact E-mail Address section, type the e-mail address of a contact in your organization.

  3. Click OK.
