The Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager monitors the Windows Application log on computers running Exchange 2010 and generates this alert when the events specified in the following Details table are logged.

Rule Name

Explanation

This Error event indicates that the Exchange Transport service could not listen on the Receive connector because a "Socket Access Denied" error occurred. This problem typically occurs when the Internet Information Services (IIS) Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service is installed on the server and is running.

User Action

To resolve the problem, you must remove the SMTP service. To do this, use one of the following methods:

  • In Server Manager, remove the SMTP service by using the standard removal tools.

  • In Windows Server 2008, remove the SMTP service in a Command Prompt window. To do this, use the servermanagercmd.exe command. For example, use the following command:

    ServerManagercmd -remove SMTP-Server

    This command is deprecated in Windows Server 2008 R2. In Windows Server 2008 R2, you can use the Remove-WindowsFeature command. For example, use the following command:

    Remove-WindowsFeature SMTP-Server

  • Resolve your issue by using self-support options, assisted support options, and other resources. You can access these resources from the Exchange Server Solutions Center. From this page, click Self-Support Options in the navigation pane to use self-help options. Self-help options include searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, posting a question at the Exchange Server forums, and other methods. Alternatively, in the navigation pane, you can click Assisted Support Options to contact a Microsoft support professional. Because your organization may have a specific procedure for directly contacting Microsoft Product Support Services, be sure to review your organization's guidelines first.
