Troubleshooting Your DPM 2007 Upgrade

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2007

This topic provides troubleshooting guidance for upgrading from pre-release versions of System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 issues.

DMP V2 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 upgrade failure

If the upgrade from DPM V2 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 fails, perform the following steps to revert back to your DPM Beta 2 installation:

  • In Control Panel, in Add or Remove Programs, select Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007, and then perform the upgrade again.

If DPM 2007 does not appear in Add or Remove Programs, or if the upgrade continues to fail, contact Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS).

  • If Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 appears in Add or Remove Programs, select Remove, and then perform the following steps:

    1. Reinstall DPM v2 Beta 2.

    2. Restore the backed up DPM database. For information about how to restore the DPM database, in the DPM Operations Guide, see "Recovering the DPM Server" in Preparing for Disaster Recovery (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=91860).

    3. Verify that DPM v2 Beta 2 functions correctly after restoring the database.

    4. Perform the upgrade again.

If the upgrade continues to fail, contact CSS.

Protection agent upgrade failure

Protected servers require a registry setting that stores the DPM server name. The registry setting format changed after the pre-release versions of DPM 2007, and therefore the protection agent upgrade for DPM 2007 RTM will fail for the following upgrade scenarios.

  • DPM 2007 Technology Adoption Program (TAP) to DPM 2007 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 RTM

  • DPM 2007 Beta 1 to DPM 2007 Beta 2 to DPM 2007 RTM

Solution

To correct the registry setting format

  1. On the protected computer, from the command prompt, change the directory to <drive letter>:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin.

  2. Type SetDpmServer.exe domain_name\<DPM computer name>

To upgrade the agent locally

  • On the protected computer, from the command prompt, type DPMAgentInstaller.exe <DPM computer name><fully qualified domain name>

DPMAgentInstaller.exe is located on the DPM product DVD in the DPM2007\Agents folder.

Note

The fully qualified domain name (FQDN) is the FQDN of the DPM computer.

To update the DPM entries

  1. On the DPM server, from the command prompt, change the directory to <drive letter>:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin.

  2. Type Attach-ProductionServer.ps1

After you update the DPM entries, in DPM Administrator Console, in the Management task area, refresh the protection agent status, and then verify that the status appears as Reboot required.
