Roadmap to information resources
Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005
The following list provides information about a variety of resources that will help guide you through the process of evaluating, deploying, configuring, operating, and troubleshooting DPM.
Evaluate Data Protection Manager
Review DPM features to determine if this is the right solution for your data protection and recovery challenges. For more information, see:
The “Introducing DPM” chapter in the DPM Planning and Deployment Guide
White papers and Technical Reference articles on the Data Protection Manager Web site.
Plan a deployment
Plan your network topology, your hardware configuration, your data protection infrastructure, and your disaster recovery methodology. For more information, see:
The “Planning a Deployment” chapter in the DPM Planning and Deployment Guide
The “Planning Data Protection” chapter in the DPM Planning and Deployment Guide
Install Data Protection Manager
Verify that your network infrastructure, the DPM server, and the file servers meet the system requirements for protecting your data. DPM provides an integrated setup wizard that installs both DPM and the prerequisite software. For more information, see:
“Requirements” in DPM Setup Help
The “Installing DPM” chapter in the DPM Planning and Deployment Guide
Configure Data Protection Manager
To start protecting data, you must add disks to the storage pool, install file agents, and create protection groups. For the most benefit, configure optional DPM features such as end-user recovery, reporting, and e-mail subscriptions for reports and notifications. For more information, see:
Getting started in DPM Help
Setting system options in DPM Help
Using reports in DPM Help
Using DPM Administrator Console in DPM Help
The “Configuring DPM” chapter in the DPM Planning and Deployment Guide
Protect your data
Create protection groups, select data sources for protection, modify protection options, modify disk allocation, synchronize replicas, and create shadow copies to meet your ongoing data protection requirements.

Recover your data
Browse or search for recoverable data, recover data, create manual shadow copies, and enable end-user recovery. For more information, see:
- Recovering data in DPM Help
Monitor data protection activities
Monitor data protection activity, job status, and error conditions in DPM and take action, when necessary, to resolve issues. If you have multiple DPM servers, you can monitor them centrally in Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) by deploying the DPM Management Pack. For more information, see:
Monitoring alerts in DPM Help
Monitoring jobs in DPM Help
The “Monitoring DPM” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide
The DPM 2006 Management Pack Guide on the MOM 2005 Product Documentation Web site
Manage disks, agents, and servers
Add and remove disks; install, update, and uninstall agents; perform routine maintenance tasks, and manage network configuration changes that affect the DPM server and the protected file servers. For more information, see:
Managing disks in DPM Help
Managing agents in DPM Help
The “Managing Servers” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide
The “Configuring DPM” chapter in the DPM Planning and Deployment Guide
Optimize Performance
Evaluate and optimize the performance of the DPM server and the file servers. Isolate performance degradations and use existing tools and options, such as network bandwidth throttling and on-the-wire compression, to improve performance. For more information, see:
The “Managing Performance” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide
How to modify protection options in DPM Help
Interpreting reports in DPM Help
Archive and restore the DPM server
Plan and deploy a solution for archiving the DPM databases and replicas to tape. Archiving DPM to tape enables you to rebuild a DPM server in the event of a catastrophic hardware or software failure. For more information, see:
- The “Archiving and Restoring DPM” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide
Troubleshoot DPM issues
Find solutions when you encounter problems during the course of day-to-day operations and when performing administrative tasks. For more information, see:
The “Troubleshooting” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide
The “Error Code Catalog” appendix in the DPM Operations Guide
