Applying Operating System Updates

Published : September 27, 2005

An important part of computer maintenance is ensuring that operating systems and software are up-to-date. Updates—known as "fixes," "patches," "service packs," and "security rollup packages"—help to protect computers and data.

You can use your preferred method for deploying software updates, such as Automatic Updates or Windows Update Services (previously known as Software Update Services 2.0), on both DPM servers and protected file servers. Because some software updates require a computer restart, you should schedule or perform the updates at times that have the least impact on protection operations.

Note

When you update a protected file server to Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 you must also update the DPM File Agent. For instructions on updating file agents, see “How to update a file agent” (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51974) in DPM Help.

You should also check regularly for updates to DPM and prerequisite software. The prerequisite software is:

  • Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0

  • Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 (Standard or Enterprise Edition)

  • Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 Service Pack 3a (SP3a) or later

  • Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 hotfix 859

  • Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 Reporting Services (Standard or Enterprise Edition)

  • Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 Reporting Services Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later
