DPM Server Requirements

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

The DPM server must meet the requirements specified in the following sections.

Supported Operating Systems

The DPM server must be running one of the following operating systems:

DPM does not support 64-bit operating systems. However, DPM can be installed on 32-bit operating systems running on 64-bit hardware architectures.

Note

DPM requires Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) for communication between the DPM server and the file servers it protects. DPM cannot operate on networks that exclusively use IPv6. DPM can operate on networks that use both IPv4 and IPv6.

DPM Server Role

DPM is designed to run on a dedicated, single-purpose server. The server must not be a domain controller or application server. The DPM server must not serve as a Management Server for Microsoft® Operations Manager (MOM); you can, however, monitor the DPM server and the file servers that it protects in MOM.

Hardware Requirements

The DPM server must have at least two disks: one disk that is dedicated to the system and DPM installation files, and one that is dedicated to the storage pool.

Note

For purposes of DPM, disk is defined as any disk device manifested as a disk in Disk Management.

Table 2.1 lists general hardware requirements for the DPM server. For information about configuring DPM to support specific workloads, see the DPM 2006 Operations Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=46363).

Table 2.1   Hardware Requirements for the DPM Server

Component

Minimum

Recommended

Processor

550 MHz

1 GHz or faster

Memory

512 MB RAM

1 GB RAM

Disk space for DPM installation

System drive: 100 MB

Program files drive: 1260 MB

Database files drive: 900 MB

Disk space for storage pool

1.5 times the size of the protected data

2 to 3 times the size of the protected data

Important

To archive DPM to tape or other removable medium using DpmBackup, you must allow enough space on the program files drive for storing the backups of the DPM and Report databases. We recommend that you allow twice as much space as you allow for the databases. For information about archiving DPM with DpmBackup, see “Planning for Disaster Recovery” later in this chapter.
