Staggering Synchronization Start Times

Published : September 27, 2005

You can specify the starting time, in minutes after the hour, of synchronization jobs for each protection group. Staggered starting times minimize the network impact of running multiple large protection jobs simultaneously. DPM will automatically stagger synchronization jobs for different file servers within the same protection group, at ten minute intervals.

  • To determine if staggering the start times of synchronization jobs is appropriate for your needs, first gather information about scheduled protection jobs in DPM Administrator Console:

    • In the Network Traffic Report, examine the information for periods of high usage and consider staggering some of the jobs that occur during those periods.

    • In the Monitoring task area, on the Jobs tab, review jobs that are scheduled for times when the DPM server experiences large disk queues.

    • In the Protection task area, review details for protection groups to determine the size and frequency of protection jobs.

  • To stagger the workload in DPM, reschedule synchronization for some protection groups:

    • If a protection group has a nearly-continuous (hourly) synchronization schedule, offset synchronizations from the beginning of the hour.

    • If synchronization jobs are scheduled to run before creating each shadow copy for a protection group, consider adjusting the schedule for shadow copies.
