How to review pending members
Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005
Data Protection Manager (DPM) tracks configuration changes on the protected file servers and on the DPM server. When changes occur that might affect data protection, DPM generates a New or changed members found alert and displays it on the Alerts tab in the Monitoring task area. DPM generates this alert in response to the following situations:
File server configuration changes
As part of the auto discovery process, Data Protection Manager (DPM) queries the protected file servers once a day during off-peak hours to discover configuration changes to the volumes or shares. If new, deleted, or remapped volumes or shares are discovered during this process, they are reported as pending members.
Missing disk
If a disk in the storage pool is missing or malfunctions, the protection group members that rely on this disk for protection are reported as pending members.
Replica creation failed
If a replica fails to be created as part of the process of creating a protection group or adding a member to a protection group, the data source associated with the replica is reported as a pending member.
You can review pending members in the Protection task area and decide whether you want to add them to or remove them from your existing protection groups or to delay taking action till a later time.
To review pending members
In DPM Administrator Console, click Protection on the navigation bar.
In the Display pane, select the protection group that you want to review.
In the Actions pane, click Review pending members.
Note
This command is disabled if there are no pending members.
In the Review Pending Members dialog box, review the information in the Event Type column to determine the type of change that DPM discovered:
New volume or share
Deleted volume or share
Remapped share
Existing members whose replica and shadow copies need to be reallocated
For more information about the discovery event and to find out what happens if you take action, select a pending member, then select an action and review the information in the Details pane.
If you do not want to take action at this time, click Cancel.
To take action, choose from the following options:
To take action for a new volume or share
Select the pending member and, in the Action column, choose from the one of the following options:
Option
Description
Start protecting
Adds the pending member to the associated protection group, allocates disk space in the storage pool, and adds the member to the replica by performing a consistency check.
Do not protect
Removes “pending member” status from this data source. If you decide later that you want to protect this data source, you must manually add it to the protection group.
Do nothing for now
Retains “pending member” status. You can take action at a later time.
To take action for a deleted volume or share
Select the pending member and, in the Action column, choose from one of the following options:
Option
Description
Stop protecting
Removes the pending member from the protection group.
Continue protecting
Retains the current protection configuration for this data source. Choose this option only if you are sure the volume or share still exists or will be reinstated on the file server.
Do nothing for now
Retains “pending member” status. You can take action at a later time.
To take action for a remapped share
Select the pending member and, in the Action column, choose from one of the following options:
Option
Description
Start protecting < new data source > and stop protecting < old data source >
Adds the new data source to the protection group, allocates disk space, and synchronizes the replica. It also removes the old data source from the protection group.
Start protecting < new data source > and continue protecting < old data source >
Adds the new data source to the protection group and also keeps the old data source in the protection group. The underlying folders in the previous share continue to be protected.
Continue protecting < old data source > and do not protect < new data source >
Keeps the old data source in the protection group and removes “pending member” status from the new data source. If you later want to protect the new data source, you must manually add the data source to the protection group.
Stop protecting < old data source > and do not protect < new data source >
Removes the old data source from the protection group and also removes “pending member” status from the new data source. If you later want to protect either of these data sources, you must manually add the data source to the protection group.
Do nothing for now
Retains “pending member” status. You can take action at a later time.
To take action for an existing protection group member
Select the pending member and, in the Action column, choose from one of the following options:
Option
Description
Allocate and create replica
Allocates disk space and recreates the missing replica. Scheduled synchronization and shadow copy jobs will resume after the replica is created.
Do not protect

Do nothing for now
Retains “pending member” status. You can take action at a later time.
