Restoring a DPM Server to a New Computer

Published : September 27, 2005

You can restore a DPM server configuration to a different computer, such as in the case of hardware failure or to transfer DPM operations to a new computer; however, there are several additional tasks you must perform to enable DPM to operate correctly.

For example, you set up a new computer using the same computer name, and install DPM and all prerequisite software on the new computer. Next, you restore the DPM and Report databases that were backed up from another computer. You run DpmSync to synchronize the databases. When you open DPM Administrator Console, you see the following alerts:

  • All disks are missing

  • All protections / replicas are missing

  • All agents are unreachable

To complete the restoration of DPM to a new computer, you must resolve these alerts by performing the following procedures.

To restore missing disks

  1. Remove the missing disks (from the previous computer) from the Storage Pool. For more information, see “How to remove a disk from the storage pool” (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51983)in DPM Help

  2. Add a new set of disks (attached to the new computer) to the Storage Pool. For more information, see “How to add a disk to the storage pool” (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51985) in DPM Help.

To restore missing replicas

  1. Reallocate replicas one at a time by using DPM Administrator Console. For more information, see “How to review pending members” (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51986) in DPM Help.

    -or-

Run DpmSync -ReallocateReplica to reallocate all the missing replicas with one command. For more information, see “Using DpmSync to Restore Databases,” earlier in this chapter.

  2. Restore the backed up data from tape to the newly allocated replicas. For more information, see the documentation provided with your backup software.

To establish communication with agents

  1. Uninstall the DPM File Agent locally from each file server. For more information, see “How to uninstall a file agent” (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51987) in DPM Help.

  2. If the file agent is still displayed in the Management task area on the Agents tab, click Refresh Information to remove the Agent record from the display.

  3. Reinstall the agents by using the Management task area in DPM Administrator Console. For more information, see “How to install a file agent” (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51988) in DPM Help.

  4. Run synchronization with consistency check on each replica. For more information, see “How to synchronize a replica” (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=51910) in DPM Help.
