Moving the DPM Server Between Domains

Published : September 27, 2005

DPM can only provide protection for file servers that are located in the same domain. You cannot move a DPM server from one domain to another and maintain protection on file servers that remain in the original domain. However, you can:

  • Move a DPM server to another domain and use it to protect file servers in the new domain.

  • Move a DPM server and the file servers that it protects to another domain.

To move only the DPM server to another domain

  1. Remove all members from protection groups.

  2. Uninstall all file agents from file servers.

  3. Move the DPM server to the new domain.

  4. Install file agents on file servers in the new domain.

  5. Configure new protection groups that contain file servers in the new domain.

To move the DPM server and protected file servers to another domain

  1. Remove all members from protection groups but choose to retain the replicas and shadow copies.

  2. Uninstall all file agents from file servers.

  3. Move the DPM server and file servers to the new domain.

  4. Install file agents on the previously protected file servers.

  5. Reconfigure the previous protection groups to begin protecting previously protected data.

DPM will automatically associate the appropriate replicas from the old domain with each of the protection group members.

If moving the DPM server also requires a change to the time zone configured on the DPM server, see Changing the Time Zone of the DPM Server later in this chapter.
