Choose replica creation method

DPM can create the replicas automatically over the network, or you can create the replicas manually by using removable media such as tape. Automatic replica creation is easier, but, depending on the size of the protected data, manual replica creation can be faster. For smaller data sets, we recommend the automatic option. For large data sets, the manual option may be a better choice.

To choose a replica creation method

  1. On the Choose Replica Creation Method page, select the method you want to use to create the replicas of the protected data on the DPM server.

    • To prompt DPM to create the replica automatically, select Let Data Protection Manager replicate the files over the network, and specify the time when you want DPM to start the replication job. You can also choose to create the replica immediately. To minimize the effect on network performance, schedule replica creation for hours when network traffic is low.

    • To create the replica manually, select I will transfer the files to Data Protection Manager myself.

      Important

If you choose this option, take care to create the replica with the same directory structure and properties (time stamps and security permissions) as the data that you are protecting. After you transfer the data to the replica area on the DPM server, you must perform a consistency check to repair any inconsistencies between the replica and the protected data. If there are substantial discrepancies between the replica and the protected data, repairing the replica may take as long as it takes to replicate the files over the network. For more information about creating a replica manually, see the “Planning Data Protection” chapter in the DPM Planning and Deployment Guide and the “Troubleshooting” chapter in the DPM Operations Guide.

You must transfer all selected data that is stored on a single volume at the same time.

After you have completed the wizard, the Properties pane specifies the locations on the DPM server to which you must copy the selected data.

After you create a protection group with the manual replica creation method selected, you cannot change methods without re-creating the protection group.
