Backup Software That Supports VSS

Published : September 27, 2005

Backup software that supports VSS uses VSS-enabled file system shadow copies, but does not operate with the DPM Writer service. This software has two limitations compared to software that supports DPM. First, archive and restore operations are more complex than they are when using software that supports DPM. Second, the software that supports VSS organizes the archived replicas so that they appear to have been backed up directly from the DPM server. Organizing the backup this way can make the process of restoring data less intuitive.

For information on using DPM with software that supports VSS, see the “Featured Technical Content” section on the DPM Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?linkid=33686).
