Installing MOM Reporting

You can install MOM Reporting on the same computer as the MOM database or a Management Server. For optimum performance, it is recommended that the MOM Reporting Server be a dedicated computer. You must install the MOM database before installing MOM Reporting.

The MOM Reporting console runs within SQL Server Reporting Services. You can install MOM Reporting on the same computer as SQL Server Reporting Services or on a separate computer.

Important

You must install SQL Server Reporting Services before you can install MOM Reporting.

You should install MOM Reporting before you import Management Packs, which include MOM reports. If you do not, you will have to import the reports separately after installing the MOM Reporting. For more information, see Chapter 6, "Deploying MOM 2005 Management Packs."

Typically, there are specific rules in each Management Pack that collect the event and performance data that will eventually be used in MOM reports. To collect data that you can use for reporting, you must enable these rules and apply them to computer groups. Do not install reports without their corresponding Management Packs. For more information, see the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Operations Guide*.*

To install MOM Reporting

  1. Log on to the computer on which you want to install MOM Reporting using an account with administrative credentials on the computer where you are installing MOM Reporting and the computer where the MOM Database Server is installed.

  2. Close all open applications.

    Note

If they are stopped, the MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT services are started automatically when you install MOM Reporting.

  3. On the MOM 2005 product CD, double-click setup.exe.

  4. In the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Setup Resources dialog box, click Install Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Reporting to start the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Reporting Setup Wizard.

  5. On the Destination Folder page, click Next to accept the default location, or click Change to install to a different folder.

    Important

If you install MOM Reporting on the same computer as a Management Server, do not install it to the same directory where you installed MOM 2005 (be default this is %Program Files%\Microsoft Operations Manager 2005). If you do so, setup will remove the MOM account permissions from the directory.

  6. On the SQL Server Reporting Services Server page, specify the name of the computer on which SQL Server Reporting Services is installed. If this is the local computer, click Next. If SQL Server Reporting Services is installed on another computer, type the name of that computer, and then click Next.

    Note

If the SQL Server Reporting Services computer is beyond a firewall from the MOM Reporting Database Server, clear the Automatically detect virtual directories checkbox and enter the URL for the virtual directories in the textboxes.

  7. The Prerequisite Check page indicates whether you have met the requirements for installing Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Reporting.

  8. On the MOM Database Server Instance page, type the name of the SQL Server instance that hosts the MOM database that you want to connect to, and then click Next. Setup verifies that it can contact the MOM database on the specified computer.

    Note

In most instances, you need to type only the name of the computer on which the MOM database is installed. However, if the MOM database is installed on a non-default instance of SQL Server, you must type the computer name and the instance name using the following syntax, SQLServer_Name\SQLServerInstance_Name, Port_Number.

  9. On the SQL Server Database Instance page, click the local SQL Server instance on which you want to install the MOM Reporting database and then click Next.

    Note

If they are stopped, Setup automatically starts the MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT services when you install and uninstall MOM Reporting.

  10. On the Database and Log File Information page, type the size of the MOM Reporting database. The default setting is 1,000 MB. By default, the database data file and the database log file are installed on the same disk. To change the location of either file, click Advanced, and then click Change.

    Note

By default, the MOM 2005 Reporting Setup Wizard installs the data file and log file on the same hard disk drive. For the best performance, it is recommended that you change this setting to install the data file and log file on different hard disk drives. It is also recommended that you do not install either the data file or the log file on the same hard disk drive that the operating systems paging file is installed on.

  11. On the Scheduler Task Account page, enter the account that you want MOM to use to run the scheduled task that transfers data from the MOM Database to the MOM Reporting database. This account must be a domain user account if the MOM Database and MOM Reporting database are one separate computers. You do not need to give this account any special privileges because the MOM Reporting setup will give it the required permissions.

  12. On the Reporting User Account page, enter the account that you want SQL Server Reporting Services to use to connect to the MOM Reporting database.

If you install SQL Server Reporting Services and the MOM Reporting database on the same computer, this account can be a local account. If you install them on separate computers, this account must be a domain account that has access to the MOM Reporting database.

  13. On the Operational Data Reports Settings page, select the Yes, I want to send operational reports option if you want MOM to automatically send operational data reports to Microsoft. This setting is optional.

For more information about error reporting, see the Microsoft Data Collection Policy at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23437.

    Note

To send operational data reports, you must also install a MOM agent on the computer on which you install the MOM Reporting database.

  14. On the Ready to Install page, click Install.

Change the Schedule for Transferring MOM Data to the MOM Reporting database

MOM runs a scheduled task to periodically transfer data from the MOM database to the MOM Reporting database. By default, this task is scheduled to run at 1:00 A.M. every day. You can change the schedule.

To change the schedule of the MOM data transfer task
  1. Log on by using an account that has administrative credentials.

  2. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.

  3. In the Scheduled Tasks window, double-click SystemCenterDTSPackageTask.

  4. Click the Schedule tab and set the start time and frequency at which you want the task to run.

Note

The grooming for the MOM Database uses information in the Reporting DTS job to prevent the grooming from removing data that has not been transferred to the Reporting Database. If the DTS job fails, MOM will not groom the MOM Database for the full 60 days to avoid removing data that has not been transferred to the Reporting Database.
