Planning for Backup and Recovery

It is essential that you plan for backup and recovery as early as possible. The best time to plan for backup and recovery is during the SMS deployment planning phase.

If your site fails and you do not have a backup and recovery plan, you increase the time that the site server is not functioning, reducing the level and quality of services to clients.

If you do not have a backup and recovery plan, then:

  • The risk of site failure is higher.

  • The impact of failure on your site is greater.

  • The recovery process is more complex, takes longer, and more data is lost during the process.

For information about backup and recovery concepts and backup and recovery planning, see Chapter 13, "Planning for Backup and Recovery," in the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Concepts, Planning, and Deployment Guide.
