Upgrade Considerations

MOM 2005 introduces new functionality to Management Packs that might affect the nature of, and design priorities for, your Management Pack upgrade. This new functionality includes:

  • Microsoft Access reports are not migrated - If you want to provide reports with your Management Pack it is necessary to rewrite these reports using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services. Currently, no migration tools exist to move reports from Microsoft Access to SQL Server Reporting Services

  • Agentless monitoring - Your Management Pack should work with agentless monitoring. If you do not want to support agentless monitoring, you can prevent agentless monitoring from being used with your Management Pack. For more information, see the Agentless Monitoring chapter of this guide.

  • Deprecated helper objects - A small number of script helper objects have been removed from MOM 2005 which may result in failed scripts. As part of your migration review, ensure you are using supported script helper objects.

  • Seamless upgrade - If you have existing customers using your Management Pack, they should be able to upgrade seamlessly to MOM 2005 without loss of monitoring or functionality.

As part of your upgrade from MOM 2000 SP1 to MOM 2005, you may also want to consider implementing new functionality in the following areas:

  • Service discovery - Collect information about your application, and its relationships, which can be used by State Monitoring, the Operator console, and MOM 2005 Reports.

  • State monitoring - Provide real time health views of your application roles and components.

  • SQL Server Reporting Services reports - Use SQL Server Reporting Services to provide health, availability and performance reports for your application.

  • Topological diagrams - Provide a visual representation of your applications relationships and health, which can be exported to Microsoft Visio.

  • Public views - Enhance or extend your Management Pack public views to include new views for state, or scope existing views to a more specific set of criteria.
