Planning for High Availability

The level of availability that your monitoring solution requires depends on your companys needs. Overall availability is increased by redundancy. Thus, redundancy can mean that you should cluster applications to provide CPU redundancy, or implement a RAID solution to provide data redundancy.

When planning for high availability, first determine the importance of high availability for your organization. Is the system that youre monitoring mission critical? If so, then you probably want redundancy in your MOM deployment to ensure high availability. If its not critical, then you have to decide whether or not the extra cost of redundancy is justifiable.

If you decide to implement redundancy in your MOM deployment, there are 3 ways to improve high availability:

  • Deploy and configure MOM for agent failover.

  • Implement database clustering.

  • Use RAID on the hard drives.

  • Use multiple MOM servers and consoles.
