This chapter explains the scope of the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Deployment Guide and how to use the guide to deploy one or more management groups. A management group consists of a MOM Database, one or more MOM Management Servers, the MOM Administrator console and MOM Operator console, and up to 3,500 managed computers. A management group can also include any of the following optional components: the MOM Reporting Server, The MOM Connector Framework (MCF), product connectors and the MOM Web console.

Scope

The Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Deployment Guide provides detailed instructions and best practices for installing Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 components and for upgrading MOM 2000 SP1 to MOM 2005. This guide explains how to install all MOM components on a single computer and how to install MOM components across multiple computers. This guide also covers installing MOM 2005 in advanced configurations, such as those involving multitiering, firewalls, multihoming, or on clustered servers.

After you have installed the MOM 2005 components, refer to the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Operations Guide for detailed instructions about configuring, operating, and maintaining MOM 2005.

Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Deployment Guide provides information about how to deploy three distinct MOM design architectures. These design architectures have been thoroughly tested and are the only supported MOM architectures. The supported architectures are:

  • Single management group with agent failover

  • Multiple management groups with multihomed agents

  • Multitiered management groups

The single management group architecture represents the base MOM deployment design. The multiple management groups with multihomed agents and the alert-forwarding (i.e. mutlitiered) architectures are advanced architectures, which are based on the single management group architecture.

This guide does not include information about the hardware and software requirements for MOM 2005. For information about the hardware and software requirements, see the "MOM 2005 Supported Configurations" data sheet on the MOM 2005 CD.

This guide does not include information about planning or sizing your MOM deployment.

How to Use This Guide

The Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Deployment Guide is organized based on the size and complexity of the IT environment. The MOM deployment that will best meet your needs depends on the number of computers that you plan to manage and the level of complexity in your IT environment.

You should use this guide in conjunction with the "MOM Performance and Sizing" white paper and MOM Management Sizer. They can help you to determine the size and configuration of the MOM deployment that best fits your environment. Installing all MOM 2005 components on a single computer

If you plan to manage less than 200 computers, you can usually accomplish this by installing all MOM 2005 components on a single computer that is appropriately sized and configured. If the number of managed computers grows beyond 200, you can install additional Management Servers on separate computers.

Chapter 2, "Installing MOM 2005 on a Single Computer," provides detailed instructions for installing all MOM 2005 components on a single computer.

Installing MOM 2005 components across multiple computers

If you plan to manage more than 200 computers or to provide for agent failover, it is recommended that you install MOM 2005 components across multiple computers that are appropriately sized and configured for each component. With agent failover, the MOM agents on managed computers can automatically report to other Management Servers in the same management group if their primary Management Server becomes unavailable.

Chapter 3, "Deploying MOM 2005 across Multiple Computers," provides detailed instructions for installing MOM 2005 components across multiple computers.

Installing specific MOM 2005 components

Whether you install the MOM 2005 components on a single computer or across multiple computers, you will need to refer to the following chapters. These chapters provide more detail about installing MOM agents, MOM Reporting, and MOM Management Packs.

Chapter 4, "Discovering Computers and Deploying MOM Agents," provides detailed instructions for installing MOM agents remotely or manually.

Chapter 5, "Deploying MOM 2005 Reporting," provides detailed instructions for installing MOM 2005 Reporting.

Chapter 6, "Deploying MOM 2005 Management Packs," provides detailed instructions for importing MOM 2005 Management Packs.

Installing MOM 2005 in advanced environments

Some IT environments might require more advanced deployment and installation scenarios for MOM 2005. Some examples are deploying MOM across firewalls or non-trusted domains, installing the MOM Database or the MOM Reporting Database on a cluster, or using command-line parameters to install MOM components or agents.

Chapter 7, "Deploying MOM 2005 in Advanced Environments," provides detailed instructions for installing MOM 2005 components in advanced environments.

Chapter 8, "Deploying Multiple Management Groups with Multihomed Agents," provides detailed instructions for deploying multihomed MOM agents that report to multiple management groups.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Check the hardware specifications for any computer hosting the MOM Database, Management Server, the MOM consoles, MOM Reporting Database, MOM Reporting Services, or agents against the minimum hardware and software requirements that are specified in the "MOM 2005 Supported Configurations" data sheet on the MOM 2005 CD. Either remove any computer that does not meet the minimum hardware or software specification from your rollout plan or upgrade it to the appropriate hardware or software specification. Also check the available disk space on the computer to verify that it falls within the stated guidelines for free disk space.
