Scripting Client Operations

Scripting SMS client operations can be useful in a variety of situations, including:

  • Creating discovery data records (DDRs) for clients to discover clients using unconventional techniques and possibly to force their installation (with Client Push Installation).

  • Creating status Management Information Format (MIF) files to extend advertisement status reporting for software distributions.

  • Extending hardware inventory to collect details about clients that are impossible or inefficient to collect without the flexibility of scripting.

  • Configuring or controlling Advanced Client activities or presenting users with a customized interface.

Other than the hardware inventory extensions, scripting client operations does not use WMI. In all cases, scripting client operations does not use the same specific techniques that have been discussed so far in this appendix, although the general techniques of scripting are still similar.
