Exporting and Importing the Web Sites and Services MP

The usual techniques for backing up and exporting Management Packs assume that all of the information about a Management Pack is stored in the MOM Operations database. Because the Web Sites and Services MP uses Request Sequence data files to store additional information, the backup and export process requires additional steps.

The steps for importing are the same whether you are restoring the Request Sequences on their original management group, or moving them to a different management group.

Exporting Individual Request Sequences

The Request Sequences can be exported from any computer with the MOM Administrator console and the MP Configuration Wizard installed.

To export the Request Sequences and their data files

  1. Create a backup folder for storing the files you are about to export.

  2. Open the MOM Administrator console.

  3. Browse to the Request Sequence Groups rule group. For each Request Sequence you want to back up, note the name and GUID of the corresponding rule. The Rule GUID is visible in the Event Rule Properties dialog box.

Appendix A includes a table for recording the rule information you need during the export and import process.

  4. Open the Web Sites and Services MP Configuration Wizard. Connect to the Management Server, and select the Manage Request Sequence Groups configuration task. Proceed through the rest of the Wizard without making any changes. This step refreshes the local cache of Request Sequence data files.

  5. Open Windows Explorer, and browse to the C:\Documents and Settings\[logged on user’s account]\Application Data\ folder, which is used by the MP Configuration Wizard for storing Request Sequence data files. The Request Sequence XML data files use the Rule GUID as their file name. Copy each file that corresponds to one of the rules you want to export and store the copy in your backup folder.

  6. Return to the MOM Administrator console. Right-click Management Packs, and then select Import/Export Management Pack. During the export, select the rule groups that contain the rules you want to back up.

  7. Save the .akm file to your backup folder.

  8. The .akm file, along with the .xml files in your backup folder contain all the information you need to restore the Request Sequences on the current management group, or to deploy the Request Sequences on a new management group.

Importing Individual Request Sequences

The Request Sequences can be moved to a new management group from any computer with the MOM Administrator console and the MP Configuration Wizard installed.

To import the Request Sequences and their data files:

  1. Make sure a local copy or shared folder of the exported files is accessible.

  2. Open the MOM Administrator console. Right-click Management Packs, and then select Import/Export Management Pack. Import the .akm file from your backup folder.

  3. Copy and paste the rules from the newly-imported rule group to the destination rule group under the Request Sequence Groups rule group.

  4. Note the new Rule GUID value assigned to each imported rule.

  5. Open the MP Configuration Wizard. Connect to the Management Server and select the Manage Request Sequence Groups configuration task. Proceed through the rest of the Wizard without making any changes. This step refreshes the local cache of Request Sequence data files.

  6. Open Windows Explorer, and browse to the C:\Documents and Settings\[logged on user’s account]\Application Data\ folder. Copy the Request Sequence XML data files from your backup folder to this Application Data folder.

  7. Rename the .xml files, using the new Rule ID values you noted in step 4.

  8. Open the MP Configuration Wizard again. Connect to the Management Server and select the Manage Request Sequence Groups configuration task. The imported Request Sequence Groups and Request Sequences should be displayed. Proceed through the rest of the Wizard and save your changes to the Management Server. This step updates the Request Sequence data files stored in the Web Sites and Services MP BITS virtual directory on the Management Server.
