Backup and Recovery

SMS 2003 provides robust and efficient backup and recovery features, including:

  • You can now back up secondary sites.

  • The backup control file is more user friendly and easier to use. The backup control file parser and syntax checking has also been improved.

  • The backup task is more efficient and no longer backs up the entire site. Rather, it only backs up what will be necessary during site restoration. This reduces the backup cycle time and the amount of space necessary to store the site backup.

  • Backup error logging has been improved.

  • New tools for backup and recovery.

For more information, see Chapter 13, "Planning for Backup and Recovery." Also, see Chapter 15, "Backup and Recovery," in the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Operations Guide.

Recovery Tools

The following new backup and recovery tools are integrated into SMS 2003.

Recovery Expert

The Recovery Expert is an essential recovery tool that collects information about a site failure scenario and produces a list of tasks to be performed for site recovery. Any site server on which the Recovery Expert Web will be installed must have IIS enabled. You can later use Internet Explorer to connect to the Recovery Expert Web site and to run the Recovery Expert. For more information, see Chapter 13, "Planning for Backup and Recovery." Also see Chapter 15, "Backup and Recovery," in the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Operations Guide.

Repair Wizard

You can perform complicated recovery tasks by using the Repair Wizard, which is integrated with the Recovery Expert. The Recovery Expert instructs you when to use the Repair Wizard.

ACL Reset

ACL Reset is a command-line tool that runs on the site server and is used for resetting access control lists on files and registry keys. You can run ACL Reset manually from the command line, or you can run it by an automated script.

Hierarchy Maintenance Utility

The Hierarchy Maintenance Utility is used to diagnose problems in a site, repair a site, or stop all SMS services at a site. For example, if an SMS site is removed incorrectly by removing a child site from its parent site without detaching it first, you can use the Hierarchy Maintenance Utility to bypass the SMS Administrator console and delete the incorrectly removed site from the parent site database.
