SMS 2003 offers additional tools to support SMS site maintenance and upgrade:

  • Deployment Readiness Wizard

  • Network diagnostic tools

  • Performance monitor counters

Deployment Readiness Wizard

You must use the SMS 2003 Deployment Readiness Wizard before you begin an upgrade from SMS 2.0 to SMS 2003. This tool is run from SMS Setup and identifies potential problems before SMS 2003 is installed.

Network Diagnostic Tools

Network diagnostic tools include:

Network Discovery

Network Discovery gathers information about network devices, such as IP addresses, computer names, and operating systems.

Network Trace

Network Trace creates a network map of SMS site systems.

Network Monitor

Network Monitor is a Windows tool that you use to detect and troubleshoot problems on local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and serial links running Microsoft Remote Access Server (RAS). Network Monitor analyzes captured data and provides information for solving network problems.

Performance Monitor Counters

SMS 2003 provides a wide range of performance monitor counters which are accessed using the Windows System Monitor. These counters are helpful for maintaining SMS, identifying problem areas, tuning SMS systems, and troubleshooting. System Monitor gathers information about growth patterns which you can use to plan for future hardware growth.
