Planning an Upgrade

Before upgrading to Microsoft® Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, you must create a plan that addresses the strategies you want to use to upgrade your SMS hierarchy, sites, and clients. You must also consider how to address features that are not supported in SMS 2003, and how to plan for new features that are in SMS 2003. This chapter is intended to supplement the information in Chapter 8, "Designing your SMS Sites and Hierarchy," and Chapter 10, "Planning Your SMS Deployment and Configuration."

Note:

  • For a step-by-step description of SMS site deployment procedures and common SMS site deployment scenarios, see Chapter 1, "Scenarios and Procedures for Deploying SMS," in the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Operations Guide.

The steps you take to upgrade to SMS 2003 depend on the configuration of your existing SMS sites and the system management goals you have. Some goals you have might include:

  • Adopting the Advanced Client to reduce the overall number of sites that you administer.

  • Managing an increased number of mobile devices in your enterprise.

This chapter describes strategies to help ensure a successful upgrade from SMS 2.0 SP4 or later to SMS 2003.

In This Chapter

  • Overview.

  • Preparing to Upgrade.

  • Upgrade Strategies.

  • Finalizing Your Upgrade Plan.

  • Post-upgrade Migration Planning.
