Sizing SMS Component Servers

System Monitor is an effective tool for determining server performance. Remember that the process of sizing servers is not a one-time task. Server sizing is initially done to determine the appropriate server hardware given a specific operating scenario, such as supporting 50,000 clients running hardware and software inventory, and running five packages a day. However, you should continue to monitor the server's performance after you deploy SMS to ensure that that server continues to perform within acceptable thresholds. Ultimately, it is the server performance that determines the appropriate server hardware configuration and the need for future modifications, perhaps in the form of upgrades or replacement of equipment. This section covers the following topics:

  • Setting Expectations and Service Level Agreements

  • Methods and Formulas Used to Determine Server Capacity

  • Determining Primary and Secondary Site Server requirements
