Site Design Testing

When testing your SMS design, focus on the functions and configurations important in your particular production environment. For example:

  • If your design calls for many secondary sites, consider setting up your lab structure with as many secondary sites as possible.

  • If you plan to use SMS for hardware and software inventory or to upgrade client operating systems, verify the procedures in your lab and in your pilot project before deploying SMS.

  • Try to replicate and test the limits that you expect to encounter in your organization (for example, the slowest site server, the busiest management point, the least reliable network link, and the largest software packages).

This does not mean that you should set up a full production environment in your lab. However, you must set up a representative sample of your production environment. Plan your testing so that you can use the equipment you have to maximum advantage, and proceed in a logical and controlled manner. Start by testing features that are mission-critical to your company.
