This article identifies the key components of the Web tier and helps you to distinguish from the parts of the other tiers in the EPM solution.

The Web tier of the EPM Solution includes two components: Microsoft Office Project Web Access and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, both of which are integrated with Internet Information Services (IIS).

Office Project Web Access

Office Project Web Access is designed for use by all project team members, administrators, and anyone else who needs access to Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 data. Office Project Web Access is essentially a set of Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 applications that use the Project Server Interface (PSI). Office Project Web Access requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x or Windows Internet Explorer 7 and Office Project Server 2007 Web Parts. Office Project Web Access is built on Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 for ease of use, improved administration, and ease of customization and integration with other applications.

Team members who use Office Project Web Access only for timesheet updates and status reports no longer need to download the ActiveX Project grid control. The grid control is still used on some pages that project managers typically use, such as project details pages.

You can install Office Project Web Access with Office Project Server 2007 on the same computer, and you can also install it on one or more separate servers.

Windows SharePoint Services

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is a Web-based team collaboration and document management application. When you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, you get the following features:

  • Team collaboration You can create Web sites to help team members share documents, synchronize calendars, stay up to date with team events, create surveys, and assign tasks.

  • Document storage and workflow SharePoint sites can be used to store, share, and track documents, supporting rich document metadata, workflow, search, check-in and check-out, document versioning, and a recycle bin for recovering documents deleted from the site.

  • Platform for collaboration and document management solutions Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is a powerful platform, providing an application programming interface (API) for building custom Web applications that include collaboration and document-management features.

  • SharePoint Central Administration You use this Web browser interface to manage a single server or an entire server farm running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. If you prefer, you can also use the Stsadm.exe command-line utility to manage your servers.

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 can be installed along with Office Project Server 2007 on a single server or a load-balanced server farm. Users can use Office Project Web Access to access the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 features of Office Project Server 2007, although it is also possible to use a stand-alone Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site. Office Project Server 2007 can be installed in conjunction with other Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 applications and services. Office SharePoint Server 2007 aggregates applications and services that were previously separate products. For example, the functionality of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 are now part of Office SharePoint Server 2007. In addition, Office SharePoint Server 2007 adds new administrative, collaboration, business process management, and business intelligence features along with Excel Services in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, a common search architecture, and workflow.
