After you install and configure Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, you must also configure several services to take advantage of the administrative features and capabilities of Office SharePoint Server 2007.

You can configure the following services:

  • Search

  • Index

  • User profiles database

  • My Sites

  • Business Data Catalog

  • Excel Services

You can configure these services on any number of servers in a farm environment. For example, for a small deployment, you can configure all the services on one server, or you can scale them out according to the requirement. You must have knowledge about the farm server environment before you begin this task.

The Search service can reside on a single server or on multiple servers. However, the Index service can reside only on one server in a farm. You can also run the Central Administration service on only a single server in a farm.
