Task requirements

To install language template packs, you must have your Windows Server 2003 product disk, or you must know the location of a shared folder that contains the operating system installation files.

You must restart your computer after you install supplemental language files to ensure that the changes take place.

You must run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard after you install a language pack to ensure the necessary configurations are performed.

You must be a member of the following groups to complete this procedure:

  • Farm Administrators SharePoint group.

  • Administrators group on the server computers on which you are installing the language template packs.

Install language template packs

When you install language packs, the language-specific site templates are installed in the following directory: %COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\12\Template\language identifier number, where language identifier number specifies the language that you are installing. For example, the U.S. English language pack installs to the %COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\12\Template\1033 directory.

After you install a language pack, site owners and site collection administrators can create sites and site collections based on the language-specific site templates by specifying a language when they are creating a new SharePoint site or site collection.

Important

The language pack installs in its native language. For example, the Russian language pack executable file is localized into Russian. The following procedure is for installing the English language pack.
