Manage Excel Services trusted file locations

Applies To: Office SharePoint Server 2007

This Office product will reach end of support on October 10, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see , Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Trusted file locations are Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 sites, Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths, or HTTP Web sites from which a server running Excel Calculation Services is permitted to access workbooks.

You can create different trusted file locations for different purposes or projects, and you can tailor the settings and permissions of the file locations accordingly.

Initially, there are no Excel Services trusted file locations. To use Excel Services, you must create at least one trusted file location.

To manage Excel Services trusted file locations, open the Excel Services Trusted File Locations page:

  1. Open the administration page for the Shared Services Provider (SSP).

To open the administration page for the SSP, do the following:

    1. On the top navigation bar, click Application Management.

    2. On the Application Management page, in the Office SharePoint Server Shared Services section, click Create or configure this farm’s shared services.

    3. On the Manage this Farm’s Shared Services page, click the SSP for which you want to open the administration page.

  2. On the Shared Services Administration Home page, in the Excel Services Settings section, click Trusted file locations.

What do you want to do?

  • Add a trusted file location

  • Edit a trusted file location

  • Delete a trusted file location

Add a trusted file location

  1. On the Excel Services Trusted File Locations page, click Add Trusted File Location.

  2. On the Excel Services Add Trusted File Location page, in the Location section, type an address for the trusted file location.

The address format must match the type of location that you are specifying. The type of location is specified in the next step.

  3. In the Sessions Management section, in the Session Timeout box, type a value in seconds that an Excel Calculation Services session can be open and inactive before it is shut down, as measured from the end of each Open request.

    • If you want the session to have no time-out, type -1.

    • To let the session expire at the end of a single Open request, type 0.

  4. In the Workbook Properties section, in the Maximum Workbook Size box, type a value in megabytes (MB) for the maximum size of workbook that Excel Calculation Services can open.

Performance and resource availability can be compromised when users open extremely large workbooks. If you do not control the allowable size that workbooks running in open Excel Calculation Services sessions can have, you risk having users exceed your resource capacity and overloading the server.

  5. In the Maximum Chart Size box, type a value in MB for the maximum size of chart that can be opened by Excel Calculation Services.

  6. In the Calculation Behavior section, in the Volatile Function Cache Lifetime box, type a value for the maximum time in seconds that a computed value for a volatile function is cached for automatic recalculations.

    • To calculate the volatile function once on open, type -1.

    • To continuously calculate the function, type 0.

  7. Under Workbook Calculation Mode, select one of the following:

    • File   Select this option to perform calculations as specified in the file.

    • Manual   Select this option if you want recalculation to occur only when a Calculate request is received.

    • Automatic   Select this option if you want any change to a value to cause the recalculation of all other values that are dependent on that value. Also, volatile functions are called if their time-out has expired.

    • Automatic except data tables   Select this option if you want any change to a value to cause the recalculation of all other values dependent on that value, so long as the values are not in a data table. Also, volatile functions are called if their time-out has expired.

  8. In the External Data section, under Allow External Data, select one of the following:

    • None   Select this option to disable all external data connections for the trusted file location.

    • Trusted data connection libraries only   Select this option to only enable connections to data sources that are part of a trusted data connection library. The server will ignore settings embedded in the worksheet.

    • Trusted data connection libraries and embedded   Select this option to instruct the server to try embedded connections to data sources only after the server fails to try connections to data sources that are part of a trusted data connection library.

If you are managing data connections for a small number of workbook authors, consider selecting this option. This enables workbook authors to embed direct connections to external data sources in their workbooks but to still have access to trusted data connection libraries if the embedded links fail.

  9. Under Warn on Refresh, select the Refresh warning enabled check box to display a warning before refreshing external data for files in this location. When you select this option, you ensure that external data is not automatically refreshed without user interaction.

  10. Under Stop When Refresh on Open Fails, select the Stopping open enabled check box to stop an open operation on a file in this trusted file location under the following circumstances:

  11. Under External Data Cache Lifetime, in the Automatic refresh (periodic/ on-open) box, type a value in seconds for the maximum time that the system can use external data query results for automatically refreshed external query results. To prevent data refresh after the first query, type -1.

  12. Under External Data Cache Lifetime, in the Manual refresh box, type a value in seconds for the maximum time that the system can use external data query results for automatically refreshed external query results. To prevent data refresh after the first query, type -1.

  13. In the Maximum Concurrent Queries per Session box, type a value for the maximum number of queries that can run concurrently during a single session.

  14. In the User-Defined Functions section, select the User-defined functions allowed check box to allow user-defined functions to be called from workbooks that are located in this trusted file location.

  15. Click OK.

Edit a trusted file location

  • On the Excel Services Trusted File Locations page, point to the trusted file location that you want to edit, click the arrow that appears, and then click Edit.

Delete a trusted file location

  1. On the Excel Services Trusted File Locations page, point to the trusted file location that you want to delete, click the arrow that appears, and then click Delete.

  2. Click OK in the message box that asks whether you want to proceed with the deletion.
