By using locks, you can manually prevent user access to a site collection. You can choose from the locking options shown in the following table.

Option Description

Not locked

Unlocks the site collection and makes it available to users.

Adding content prevented

Prevents users from adding new content to the site collection. Updates and deletions are still allowed. You are required to type a reason for the lock in the Additional lock information box.

Read-only (blocks additions, updates, and deletions)

Prevents users from adding, updating, or deleting content. You are required to type a reason for the lock in the Additional lock information box.

No access

Prevents access to content entirely. Users who attempt to access the site will receive an access-denied message. You are required to type a reason for the lock in the Additional lock information box.

Note

If you want to limit the amount of content that can be stored on a site, rather than locking the site, you can use quotas instead of locks. For more information about quotas, see Create quota templates and Change quota templates.

Lock or unlock a site collection

  1. On the top link bar, click Application Management.

  2. On the Application Management page, in the SharePoint Site Management section, click Site collection quotas and locks. The Site Collection Quotas and Locks page opens.
